Creating / Editing pages A guide to creating new pages and updating existing ones
At all times be VERY careful not to over write exisiting pages by accident
Introduction

Over time certain pages across the site may well become out of date or you might find some sections need expanding to cover new additions and features. This section should provide you with enough information to enable you to add new pages and edit the existing ones as needed to keep the site up to date using Frontpage.

Creating a new page

Creating a new page isn't that difficult but care must be taken to get it right so don't rush things. To make the page creation as easy as possible it's best to create the page content outside of an actual page, think of it as a notepad where you can rough everything out until you get the layout you like. For this purpose there are several templates provided which are basically tables into which you can place all your content, the templates cover 1 column, 2 column and 4 pane page layouts (for information about page layout see Page Structure).

So here's how to create a new page :-

Step 1

Decide which content template your page will use. The vast majority of pages will use the 1 column template but 2 column and 4 pane ones are also available. All the templates reside in the /templates directory.

Step 2

Open up your chosen template in Frontpage and change the page header information as required :-

  • Title Information Here - change this to the title of the page.
  • more info here - a brief description of the purpose of the page(do not use more than one line of text).
  • more info here - add any more information that you might want people to know about the purpose of this page or it's useage.
Step 3

Decide exactly which section this new page will be placed in. This will affect the way you display the content in step 4. Take a look at the titles of the pull down menus running along the top of each page for the individual sections or for an overview of the Site Structure see Site Structure.

Step 4

Add your content in the cell where you see the words "Place Content here".

When adding content you must take several things into consideration. If you haven't done so already go and read through the Styles page then come back.

  • Remember edit>copy, edit>paste and table>select>table are very helpful, with the later being used to highlight whole tables. If you need anything from the Styles page open up /templates/styles.shtml to copy and paste any element you need (this will mainly be Section Bars).
  • No one likes large chunks of text so try breaking it down into sections, try using Section Bars to break the text up.
  • As you'll see each section has it's own colour scheme for Section Bars so stick to the correct colour for the section in which the new page will live.
  • Make good use of the text styles to draw attention to various points using red text, simply highlight something using blue text or to take emphasis away using note text.
  • Adding pictures is another good way to liven up pages as well, see the section on "Adding Pictures" lower down this page.
Step 5

You should now have a page of content that you're happy with, now would be a great time to save this file in the correct section's directory (see Site Structure if you need a reminder). Try and pick a title for the page that says something about the actual page itself, for example this page is called editingpages.shtml. ALL pages must saved with the extension .shtml.

Step 6

Place the cursor in some of the main content. Select table>select>table and you should see the whole table become highlighted, then select edit>copy.

Step 7

We now need to incorporate the new content page into the full blown page design so to do that we need a clean page devoid of content. At this point you can either open an existing page in the same section and remove all the content or, far better, you can open up the page /templates/blank.shtml (recommended). This template page is already setup with all the Server Side includes (see Server Side Includes) that a page needs.

Step 8

With the page blank.shtml open highlight the words "Paste Here" the select edit>paste. You should now see your content sitting nicely inside a complete page design.

Step 9

You now need to change the page's title to a more appropriate one so highlight the text "Page Title Including Location" and replace it with the title of your new page. Remember this also includes the section in which the page is located, for example this page is "Site Maintenance and Help : Creating / Editing pages", it's a good idea to check the titles of other pages inside the same section so that you get yours correct.

Step 10

Time to save the page again, simply save it in the same location and with the same filename as used in Step 5, overwriting the existing file. You now have a completed page.

Step 11

Lastly, so people can find your new page, you will need to add a link to your page in the Left Hand Menu of the relevant section (see Left Hand Menus).

Note : A link can be added in the Pull Down Menus (see Pull Down Menus) however this is best only done in cases where the section's pull down menu is reasonably empty or if it's a very important page.

Editing an existing page

Editing a page is basically a matter of opening the page in Frontpage, making the alterations you require and then resaving the edited page. As long as you don't forget to stick to the guidelines laid down in both the Page Structure and Styles pages you shouldn't go far wrong.

Adding Pictures

Adding a picture is pretty straightforward and, as with various other aspects of the content creation, involves copying and pasting a table from the /templates/styles.shtml file.

  • Place the picture you want to add inside the /images folder in the root of whichever section you are intending to display it. If the picture will be used across more than one section place it in the /images folder in the site root instead.
  • Open the /templates/styles.shtml file and click on the Eurofighter picture towards the bottom of the page, selecting the picture.
  • Select table>select>table to highlight the small table in which the image sits then select edit>copy to copy the table.
  • Open up the page on which you want the picture then select edit>paste to place the picture on the page at the spot you want it placed. If you then reselect the picture table (table>select>table) you can use the font toolbar to position it in amongst text by using the Align Left / Center / Align Right buttons just to the right of the Bold / Italic / Underline ones (see picture below).

  • Lastly change the default Eurofighter image to the image of your choice by clicking on the image, selecting format>properties then altering the Picture Source to point to your required image.
Important

Including large images will break the site and make pages slower to load. Images must not exceed 700 pixels in width under any circumstance.

Document links - if you are linking to a document for dowload you MUST select insert>hyperlink and set the target frame to new window.
